In intercorporeality, we are always already related to the Other with our body – even before we think – so that the body is in a certain sense everything and involved in the constitution of all phenomena. What significance does this dimension of intercorporeality have in the psychotherapeutic situation? Often, what comes immediately to our body is filtered out of conscious awareness because it confronts us with the fact that the self is indeed not autonomous. Is it possible to train attention to the intercorporeal events in the psychotherapeutic situation? This entire complex is addressed in Jörg Scharff's book in an innovative and professionally competent manner. In the protected transitional space of a clearly defined setting, seminar participants have the opportunity to perform mini-sequences that regularly occur in therapeutic practice, taking on the role of a virtual patient or therapist. The experiences of all participants are processed and theoretically contextualized. The discussions are based on the experiences gained in a series of seminars of this type. It is a direct, body-oriented, highly intense experiential learning process, where not just something is talked about, but where the shared point of reference is the lively participation in a currently experienced scene. Therefore, Scharff recommends placing such seminars at the beginning of the practical training in psychoanalysis and general psychodynamic education.
