This book builds on "Freud and Psychoanalysis" as well as "Psychoanalysis in the Years After Freud" and shows how psychoanalysis has evolved. Beyond ego and object relations psychology, it now focuses on the significance of current relationships, with profound implications for treatment practice. Many traditional concepts have been questioned, modified, or abandoned. Attunement, authenticity, and controlled openness increasingly shape the therapeutic encounter. The book illuminates the origins, opportunities, and risks of these developments and places them in the context of current mental disorders and therapeutic challenges.

For the 4th edition, the work has been comprehensively updated, adapted to the professional developments of the last ten years, and expanded with a contemporary perspective.

Prof. Dr. med. habil. Michael Ermann, psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, is an emeritus professor of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and currently lives in Berlin.
