Psalm 44

The novel by Danilo Kiš, translated into German for the first time, tells the story of Maria, a Jewish woman who flees Birkenau in 1944 with her seven-week-old son, born in the camp. "Never again has Kiš addressed the topic of the persecution of Jews with such directness, both physically and in close-up," writes Ilma Rakusa in her afterword. He skillfully weaves the story of the escape with flashbacks from Maria's childhood, including the anti-Semitic attacks at school and the massacre in Novi Sad. "Psalm 44" is both thematically and linguistically an important component of the work, which has now been fully translated in honor of the 30th anniversary of Kiš's death on October 15.
