Few people know today that the story of Giacomo Ui from Padua is a "satire on Hitler in the style of Renaissance historiographers," as Walter Benjamin learns during one of his visits to Brecht in Danish exile in September 1934. Few know today that the playwright and lyricist first gains regional attention as a storyteller with his "pirate story" Bargan lässt es sein (published in September 1921 in Munich): "Everyone knows the novella in Merkur and talks about it, and they all want to help me," Brecht notes—while searching for "connections" in Berlin—reporting this from there at the end of the year. This quarto edition gathers the major exile texts and projects, the Threepenny Novel, and the novel fragments about the so-called Tuis or about Caesar, as well as early drafts of novels related to business.
