Observers of current events are increasingly aware of the creeping transformation of parliamentary democracies towards authoritarian systems. Organizations that are solely committed to capital interests are creating supranational structures that evade democratic control. Politically elected representatives of the people find themselves reduced to accomplices of the economically powerful, many of whom align themselves with them. "The End of Democracy ... as We Know It" was the title of the contribution by sociologist Bernd Hamm, who passed away in 2015, and it served as the impetus for this book. The authors gathered here analyze his findings from various perspectives. Together, they share the conviction that the liberal democracies, as they have developed since World War II, are in decline.
