Karl Gerstner's works are among the most significant in the history of graphic design. In "Designing Programmes," the designer outlines his design concept in four essays, which not only provided a foundation for design in the early days of the computer era but is also more central than ever in the age of digital technologies. The book is Gerstner's most well-known publication and, in light of current developments, a milestone in the field of programmed design.

"Designing Programmes" was first published in 1964. A redesigned version of the book was released by Lars Müller Publishers in 2007.
