The following paper deals with privatisations in the sovereign security sector and more specifically with the outsourcing of formerly state-run security tasks to private security service providers. Both are dealt with in the following from a political as well as a legal and constitutional perspective. One focus is on the complex of topics of private security companies as such. The historical background, the mercenaries, will be started systematically. In view of the current political debate, it is essential to take a closer look at the differentiation criteria, the range of services offered, the developmental steps and current forms of security companies.
