Product details
Michail Prischwin (1873-1954) was born as the son of a merchant in the village of Chruschtschowo near Jelez. He initially studied in Riga, where he was arrested in 1897 and later placed under house arrest for participating in the dissemination of revolutionary writings. After a brief stint as an agronomist, he worked as a journalist and during the civil war as a village teacher, librarian, and museum curator. From 1905 onwards, Prischwin kept a diary and published his first literary texts. In addition to short stories, his autobiographical novel "The Chain of Kashtchey" and the story "Shen-Schen" established his reputation. For a long time, it remained unknown that after 1917, Prischwin also wrote works of a political-philosophical nature, which could only be published decades later due to censorship—such as "The Earthly Chalice." The Russian edition of his diaries, which began in 1991, was completed in 2017.
Eveline Passet, born in 1958, studied Slavic and Romance languages in Paris. She translates from French and Russian (including works by Constant, Pennac, Rosanow, Golowanow, and Kuprin), writes radio features, and conducts training for translators. Together with Gabriele Leupold, she published "In the Mine of Language" (2012). In 2017, she received the Zug Translator Scholarship for her lifetime achievement and her work on the Prischwin diaries.
Michail Shishkin, born in Moscow in 1961, moved to Switzerland in 1995. Shishkin is considered one of the most significant contemporary Russian authors. His novels have been translated into over thirty languages, and he has received all major Russian literary awards, including the International Literature Prize in 2011 for "Venushaar." He currently lives in Switzerland.
