With this book, the authors have created a guide that imparts extensive knowledge on all aspects of the basic training of Western horses. Every Western horse requires thoughtful and solid foundational training. The basics are established in the first months and years of training, forming the foundation for a long, healthy life. Over three to four years, the horse needs a well-structured training program to reach its full potential by the age of seven or eight. Initially, it must learn to understand its rider. Then, through systematic training, it is physically prepared to easily meet the rider's demands. The fundamentals described in this book are essentially the same for all Western horses—if not all riding horses—before specialization occurs in various disciplines. Therefore, all (Western) riders and trainers who educate horses will benefit from the content and exercises in this book. The structure of this book is based on the systematic foundational training of the horse: understanding horses, basics for horse-friendly training, training steps, training principles, aids, sensible gymnastic exercises, and many practical exercises for thoughtful training as well as handling problems.
