Posthuman

The Posthuman offers both an introduction and a significant contribution to contemporary debates about the posthuman. Digital Second Life, genetically modified foods, advanced prosthetics, robotics, and reproductive technologies are familiar facets of our globally connected and technologically mediated societies. This has blurred the traditional distinction between humans and their Others and revealed the non-naturalistic structure of the human. The Posthuman begins by examining the extent to which a posthumanist approach displaces the traditional humanistic unity of the subject. Instead of viewing this situation as a loss of cognitive and moral self-control, Braidotti argues that the posthuman helps us understand our flexible and multiple identities. Braidotti then analyzes the escalating implications of post-anthropocentric thinking, which encompasses not only other species but also sustainability.
