"We have no alternative to post-metaphysical thinking." This sentence, written by Jürgen Habermas in his 1988 essay collection Nachmetaphysisches Denken, is still valid today. "Nachmetaphysisches Denken" - this is first of all the historical answer to the crisis of metaphysics after Hegel, whose central figures of thought were shaken mainly by social, but also inner-scientific developments. As a result, the epistemological privilege of philosophy has been shaken, its basic concepts detranscendentalized, and the primacy of theory over practice questioned. For good reasons, philosophical theory, it was diagnosed at the time, "has forfeited its extra-ordinary status," but in doing so it has also acquired new problems. In "Nachmetaphysisches Denken II" Habermas addresses some of these problems in partly unpublished essays.
