Positioning

The volume is a tribute to the medievalist Felicitas Schmieder. Her main areas of research include cultural contacts and the history of perception, prophecy as a political language, cartography, urban history, the history of Europe, and European memory culture. The volume reflects essential developmental lines towards a cultural-historical medieval studies that are closely linked to her academic biography. The contributors demonstrate the thematic advancements of her work in the fields of pre-modern cartography, social communities and urban history, cultural encounters, as well as prophecy as a political language and memory cultures. The range of contributions spans chronologically from late antiquity to modern times, geographically from the Indian Ocean through East Central Europe to the Iberian Peninsula, and methodologically from source-based to theory-driven studies. Thus, the volume provides a positioning of a modern, cross-epochal, cross-regional, and interdisciplinary medieval historical science.
