Pole Poppenspäler

Pole Poppenspäler' is Storm's first artist's novella. It tells the story of the daughter of the puppeteer Tendler, Lisei, and the art turner and mechanic Paul Paulsen. When the puppeteers give a guest performance in Paul's home town, Paul feels a strong affection for this strange world and especially for the puppeteer's daughter. After years he meets Lisei again, helps her out of a difficult situation and finally marries her, although he has to expect resistance at home against the unseemly marriage. This earns him the nickname 'Pole Poppenspäler'. Theodor Storm, who held the opinion: 'If you want to write for the young, you must not write for the young!', created one of the most valuable reading texts for the young with this story. Extensive notes as well as Storm's afterword to the first book edition complete the booklet.
