In the commentary on the Prologue of the Gospel of John, written by Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274) towards the end of his life, the various elements of his person and his work crystallize as in a burning glass: his vocation as a Dominican monk, which was entirely devoted to the proclamation of the Word of God; his closeness to the thought of Aristotle, whose philosophy and logic he knew how to make fruitful for Christian thought; his self-understanding as a master of theology, for whom the Holy Scriptures and their interpretation were the source and origin of all further systematics; yes: his theology as a whole, which from here becomes accessible in its various themes. Not without reason, his commentary has been called "the theological work par excellence" of Thomas Aquinas and "the greatest formulation of the Logos doctrine that has been found in the Western world.
