The covered bicycle parking facility designed by architects SRAP Sedlak and Rissland enhances the bike-friendly infrastructure in downtown Nuremberg. Located at the south entrance of the main train station, the long, narrow pavilion provides a dry and secure space for approximately 400 bicycles. In addition to its function as a bicycle parking facility, the shelter is also an essential part of the newly designed Nelson Mandela Square. The delicate structure features an airy, white-painted steel construction. Two overlapping layers of slender posts—vertical and diagonal—create a distinctive exterior with a moiré effect. Like the façade, the roof is simple and reduced to the essentials. Designed as a functional and urban element, the flexible system could also be implemented in other locations. The architects are currently working on variations of their bicycle shelter.
