The past does not exist for Silvia. And consequently, it does not exist for her daughter Ayleen either. However, the 17-year-old can no longer accept that everything that lies before her birth is shrouded in a dense fog that does not even allow for the recognition of shadows. Questions lead nowhere – her mother disappears at the slightest hint towards the past, silently hiding behind the mask of her noncommittal smile. Thus, Ayleen begins to peel away layer after layer of rock. She relentlessly digs deeper, uncovering traces of her father that lead to the African continent and the abysses of Swiss refugee policy, following her mother's traces into the heart of the Swiss rock massif, and pushing through to that day in Silvia's life that marked the beginning of the erasure of history. In this multi-layered novel, the impact of withheld history becomes palpable.
