Product details

The Berkefeld filter is an invention by the German engineer Wilhelm Berkefeld for the purification and disinfection of drinking water. The filter, invented in 1891, is a hollow cylinder made of porcelain with filter candles made from burnt diatomaceous earth. Filters of this type were first successfully used in 1892 during the cholera epidemic in Hamburg. The method invented by Wilhelm Berkefeld is still used today to manufacture filter systems, although with modern materials. In 1892, Wilhelm Berkefeld founded the company Berkefeld-Filter in Celle, which continues to produce systems for drinking water treatment for industries, municipalities, armies, and disaster relief organizations worldwide. The product range includes complex industrial systems, mobile filter units, and small hand-operated filters.
