Pikler

The pedagogy of Emmi Pikler is highly sought after for children under three years old. This book brings together new texts on early childhood education by the Hungarian pediatrician, along with scientific commentary and practical reports from parent and family education. The name Emmi Pikler represents humanity in the care of infants and toddlers. The works of the Hungarian pediatrician Pikler (1902–1984) and her collaborator Anna Tardos are being rediscovered for daycare centers, crèches, child day care, and parent education. The book presents texts from Pikler pedagogy in their first German publication: focusing on independent movement and play development, as well as relationship-based care—grounded in the respect for the child as an active person. The previously missing professional discourse on the Pikler approach is opened up with various voices. As a practical field of Pikler pedagogy, parent and family education is introduced. Parent-child courses demonstrate how Pikler's pedagogy can fruitfully connect parent education and early childhood education.
