The Ötztal Alps are one of the largest mountain ranges in the Eastern Alps and the one with the most peaks exceeding the magical 3000-meter mark. Wildspitze, Similaun, and Weisskugel are at the top of many ski mountaineers' wish lists, and at least for the first two destinations, one shouldn't have overly high hopes for a solitary summit snack. Around well-known hut bases like Vernagthütte, Martin-Busch-Hütte, or Hochjochhospiz, there is plenty of activity during the classic ski touring season in late winter and spring. However, away from the few hotspots, the Ötztal Alps are among the quieter corners of the Eastern Alps in winter, offering a variety of routes like few other mountain regions. From the almost pre-Alpine alpine areas around Nauders or Venetberg to the challenging steep slopes in Kaunergrat or Lower Ötztal, and the vast glacier fields along the main ridge, countless tour destinations await. And the best part: Due to the distance from large urban areas, there are far fewer ski tourers in the Ötztal Alps compared to the neighboring Stubai Alps. Powder snow all to yourself - a common occurrence in the Ötztal region.
