Piano Sonatas No. 9 E major op. 14,1 and No. 10 G major op. 14,2

Beethoven arranged one of his piano sonatas for an alternative ensemble: there exists a handwritten transcription of Sonata op. 14 No. 1 for string quartet (it is included in the appendix of our edition of the string quartets op. 18, HN 139/9139). With this arrangement, Beethoven explicitly aimed to protect himself from unauthorized adaptations. He devoted considerable care to this work, providing it with meticulous indications for dynamics and articulation. The renowned pianist Murray Perahia, who was invited as a co-editor for this new edition of the Beethoven sonatas, also takes this source into account during the revision and contributes his own fingerings.
