Product details

Mozart's piano sonatas have been part of every pianist's repertoire for over 200 years. However, research in recent decades has led to a more precise dating and classification of the works. Source-critical investigations now show that some printed editions from the 18th century hold greater source value than Mozart's own manuscript. Many works were arranged for publication by the composer himself, complete with precise performance instructions regarding dynamics and articulation. He paid particular attention to the slow movements, which are often richly adorned in the printed editions. All of this, along with newly accessible sources, provides ample reason to publish Mozart's sonatas anew in the Wiener Urtext Edition. Following the already available single edition of the Fantasy and Sonata in C minor, the second volume now includes the sonatas KV 330 to KV 576. Additionally, the two-movement sonata KV 547a is included, which elsewhere, if at all, has been unjustly overshadowed among the piano pieces. In the new edition, the slow movements of sonatas KV 332 and 457 are presented side by side for the first time in both their original and embellished forms. New impulses for often overly conventional Mozart interpretations are provided by the performance practice notes of the renowned Mozart expert Robert D. Levin. Difficulty level: 2-5.
