Nitrate is one of the most commonly occurring compounds in water bodies, as there are countless and varied natural or human-made sources. An excess of nitrate can lead to various health and environmental issues, but there are still no cheap and efficient methods for treating nitrate-contaminated water. One of the cost-effective and efficient ways to remediate nitrate or nitrite-contaminated aquifers or water sources is through photocatalysis, which uses ultraviolet or visible radiation as an energy source for the breakdown of nitrate and nitrite. New photocatalysts have been synthesized for this form of treatment that reduce nitrogen-containing substances like nitrate and nitrite to molecular nitrogen.
