Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757-1823) established the post-Kantian system philosophy that was continued by Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel starting in 1789, and later acted as a linguistic philosopher critic of speculative idealism. His program of a "philosophy without epithets," which was developed in response to Kant's critique of reason and remained significant for his further intellectual journey, encompasses foundational ideas for a system of theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as reflections on the limits of system-oriented thinking arising from the need for freedom and belief. Additionally, it is characterized by a pronounced historical and Enlightenment orientation: philosophy should be understood historically, as a perfection of its previous forms and manifestations; philosophy must connect with common sense and thereby become practical.

The contributions in this volume, which were created during the 2nd International Reinhold Conference held from March 18 to 21, 2002, at the University of Lucerne, provide a broad and representative overview of the various aspects of Reinhold's philosophy without epithets. The first thematic focus addresses questions regarding Reinhold's foundation of a system of knowledge from a first principle, as well as his monistic system idea that aims to mediate between belief and knowledge. A second series of contributions concentrates on the discussion of Reinhold's understanding of moral freedom, characterized by the integration of radical free will into Kant's concept of freedom as self-legislation. A third section discusses the previously overlooked fact that Reinhold, through his idiosyncratic development of Kant's critique of reason, also became the founder of the "historic turn" within post-Kantian thought.
