The symbol of the burning Earth is no longer just a symbol. The climate crisis has caught up with us, in Australia, California, and Brandenburg. It presents us with significant challenges in thinking—and especially in action. Traditionally, Western philosophy has understood nature as a free, wild beauty to be mastered. Yet with every further impact, we not only destroy our own basis for life but also move further away from the insight that we live in a world shared with all living beings. Therefore, the climate crisis demands an ethics that does not remain confined to the interpersonal here and now but also considers people in other countries, future generations, and perhaps other forms of life.

The special edition of the Philosophy Magazine is dedicated to the most pressing problem of our time: What should we do in the face of a future that has become a ticking time bomb? How can we overcome political inertia? Does it require a revolution, or can we counteract within our existing political systems? And how can we bridge the gap that exists between knowledge and action?
