Following the successes of her novels 'The Eighth Life (For Brilka)' and most recently 'The Insufficient Light', Nino Haratischwili has written a new play: Phaedra, in Flames is the first part of a trilogy about strong women from mythology. The world premiere at the Berliner Ensemble is scheduled for May 2023. For a long time, nothing has moved in Athens. King Theseus has grown old, and his wife Phaedra is bored - they long to relinquish power and retreat. Demophon, the firstborn, is ready and just needs to get married. However, with his bride Persea, unrest also enters Athens - and Phaedra's life. The hope for something new is confronted by the demands of the old, religious fundamentalism is spreading, and the existing order is shaking, both politically and privately. Suddenly, Theseus no longer wants to hear anything about a transfer of power, and his second son Acamas begins to rebel more and more against his father's wishes. By reinterpreting the ancient Phaedra myth, Nino Haratischwili raises questions about power, emancipation, and revisionism, in light of the current political situation.
