For children who are severely ill and face limitations in the most fundamental aspects of life, the high demand for care is primarily met by their families. This book examines what protections and legal entitlements these families have regarding care, support, and relief. It also discusses what is expected of families in terms of their own contributions and what burdens can reasonably be placed upon them. The work pays special attention to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which have only recently come into effect in Switzerland and contain significant statements on the topic at hand. In the section on social insurance benefits, the study highlights, among other things, the assistance allowance and evaluates it in light of the requirements in the areas of fundamental and human rights.
