Peter Rosegger

Peter Rosegger embodies the dreamlike rise from a simple Alpine farmer boy to the celebrated poet prince of his time. The self-taught author's memories of the forest enchanted millions. With novels such as "The Writings of the Forest Schoolmaster" and "Jakob the Last," he became a respected novelist of the 19th century. For decades, he was responsible for the esteemed monthly publication "Der Heimgarten," leaving behind a treasure trove of Styrian realities. However, his books were also appreciated far beyond the borders of his homeland, as evidenced by more than 20 translations into foreign languages. When the multiple honorary citizen and honorary doctor closed his eyes forever in his country house in Krieglach on June 26, 1918, numerous newspapers across the German-speaking world published obituaries. His death did not diminish the enthusiasm for Rosegger, and his works continue to be among the most significant in literature.
