Product details
It was on a beach in Malibu in 1988 that Peter Lindbergh took the photos of the White Shirts series that are now legendary. The simple but groundbreaking shots introduced us to Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Karen Alexander, Tatjana Patitz and Estelle Lefébure. It was the beginning of an era in which beauty was redefined and the German photographer would fundamentally change the landscape of fashion photography. This large-format coffee table book follows Lindbergh's humanistic approach and his penchant for cinematic mise-en-scène that produced photographs as seductive as they were introspective, and brings together more than 300 images from his forty-year career.
In 1980, Rei Kawakubo asked Lindbergh to photograph a Commes des Garçons campaign, one of his early forays into the world of advertising, and Kawakubo gave him a completely free hand. The years that followed took Lindbergh to the greats of the fashion industry such as Azzedine Alaïa, Giorgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander and Yohji Yamamoto - collaborations that were always based on great mutual respect, which is almost palpable in the portrait shots.
Lindbergh did important pioneering work by refusing to accept the beauty standards of the fashion industry and, in addition to the appearance of the women, emphasized their spirit and personality. In doing so, he was instrumental in the rise of models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Kristen McMenamy, and Mariacarla Boscono. Lindbergh's reach extended to Hollywood and beyond: in his photographs we encounter Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Richard Gere, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Catherine Deneuve and Jeanne Moreau. From his famous photo of the "Supermodels" that Anna Wintour made the cover of her first issue of Vogue in 1990, to lege.
