Animals have a strong appeal to children and form an essential part of their world. They facilitate learning for children and have a diverse impact on physical, psychological, and social levels. The use of animals in psychotherapy with children and adolescents is particularly beneficial and leads to a variety of intrapsychic changes that can be scientifically documented. The aim of this book is to illustrate the interactions between child and animal during psychotherapy against the backdrop of the most important psychotherapeutic approaches, and to provide practical guidance for integrating animals into inpatient and outpatient therapy for mentally ill children and adolescents. The book includes sections on animal-assisted therapy for hearing and speech impaired individuals, as well as studies on the quality of the therapeutic relationship, and demonstrates the potential uses of animals in pediatric medicine.
