The picture that naturalistic explanations draw of our language and thought practices is alien to our self-understanding. Oliver Schütze's philosophical project is to take this tension seriously without leaving the naturalistic framework. His central thesis is that an adequate understanding of such phenomena as meaning, mental content, and normativity can be developed with the help of the concept of life-form. If this endeavor is not to be arbitrary, however, it must be methodologically controlled within the framework of a naturalistic theory, as Schütze shows in his lucid book.
