The Baron de Montesquieu is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of ideas. In his fictional "Persian Letters," he examines the customs and practices of his French homeland and elaborates on his historical and political philosophical themes that would significantly shape the Enlightenment era. Many years later, he presents a key text on state theory with "The Spirit of the Laws," in which he develops the principle of the separation of powers for the first time.
