A new case leads Raben to occupied Poland, as the noose around his neck tightens. It is September 1, 1939. Hitler invades Poland. Commissioner Karl Raben is drafted into one of the Einsatzgruppen tasked with murdering Jews behind the front lines. However, when he refuses to participate in a mass execution, he is reassigned to the Kripo in Berlin. There, he is occupied with the murder case of a department head in Joseph Goebbels' Ministry of Propaganda. One of the suspects is already on the commissioner's list: Fred Wetterau, who films for the Nazi newsreel, is also one of the murderers of the communist Kurt Esser, whom Raben has been pursuing since 1932. Since Wetterau is currently filming in Poznań, Raben must return to occupied Poland to investigate. Meanwhile, SS Gruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich in Berlin is putting two and two together: Could it be a coincidence that Esser's murderers are dying one by one under unusual circumstances?.
