The intimate portrait of a woman who learns in a painful way to claim her life for herself. In Dublin in 1985, nineteen-year-old Anna Hughes falls head over heels for Peter Gallagher, an older, worldly man. Anna is introverted and naive, and Peter's experience, his large circle of friends, and his adventurous spirit fascinate her. She develops an almost obsessive dependency and allows Peter to dictate more and more of her life, until the great betrayal seems inevitable. A few years later, she meets Karim, a devout Muslim. Piece by piece, Anna is once again threatened with losing her own life. Only in retrospect can she understand how a series of small tremors could trigger a large chain of events.
