Die Grosse Mutter

The Great Mother, first published in 1974, is the main work of Erich Neumann, the most famous student and collaborator of C. G. Jung. Through an extensive collection of artworks from various world cultures, he describes the symbolism of the feminine in its diverse manifestations: devouring and birthing goddesses of ancient times, threatening and life-giving fate goddesses, the goddess as mistress of plants and animals, female mystery cults, and the figure of feminine wisdom: Sophia. It is a significant foundational work in the study of myths and, in its pictorial section, a treasure trove of archaic art history.
