A great king and his charming secret agent: Henri IV and Pierre de Siorac at the gates of Paris, France in the year 1588. The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre was sixteen years ago, but civil war between Huguenots and Catholics still rages on. Although the Duke of Guise, the head of the Catholic League, now lies stabbed in the Château de Blois, the tolerant King Henry III will be murdered the following year by a fanatical Dominican monk. A human life means little in these times. His successor on the throne is the entirely uncouth, yet militarily experienced, garlic-smelling Henri of Navarre, who seduces the girls of the land. However, Henri is a Huguenot and thus a king without a crown—since his capital Paris is occupied by the League.
