Product details
One of the most significant Siberianists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the now largely forgotten Russian-Jewish scholar Vladimir Il'ic Iochel'son (Waldemar Jochelson; 1855-1937), who, as a social revolutionary activist in exile in Siberia, turned his attention to the languages and cultures of the Yukaghirs, Lamuts (Eveny), and Yakuts. During and as a result of his involuntary stay in the 'sleeping land'—as well as his later participation in some of the most important Siberian expeditions at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century—Iochel'son became, among other things, the founder of modern Yukaghir studies and a co-founder of Arctic archaeology and anthropology. This work provides the foundations and contributions for a proposed biography of this exceptional scholar. These include a biographical sketch and various bibliographies, as well as several unpublished contributions by Iochel'son. The bibliographies consist of compilations of the scholar's own works as well as those related to his life and achievements. The unpublished writings of Iochel'son include some of his early political articles, which could only be attributed to him during the preparation of this volume, as well as manuscripts of essays (including the English translation of a contribution that exists only in Japanese). The appendices also contain some previously unpublished letters.
