Hindenburg - A German Career

Paul von Hindenburg is one of the central historical figures in German history of the 20th century. The "Victor of Tannenberg," revered as a hero, played a significant role in crucial turning points of German history. With Wolfram Pyta's book, the first comprehensive biography of Hindenburg and his era is now available. As a political actor, Hindenburg (1847-1934) was active during a time when events in Germany and Europe were tumultuous: the defeat in World War I and the revolution plunged the Empire into a deep crisis, while inflation and the Great Depression threw the Weimar Republic into severe turmoil. The world was in disarray, and Hindenburg was instrumental in shaping Germany's fate, such as during the fall of the monarchy in November 1918 or in January 1933, when he appointed Adolf Hitler as Chancellor.
