"What is Mathematics?" – this thick book provides countless answers to this question. Mathematics is much more than just a school subject or arithmetic: it is part of human culture, a vast active field of research, and a useful toolbox. Instead of a single answer, the authors paint a panorama that is colorful and diverse. It covers philosophy, proofs, big and small problems, fundamental concepts, subfields, research practices, and applications of mathematics. It also includes stories from history. The book is aimed at anyone who wants to know and think about what mathematics is, especially mathematics students. It accompanies a lecture offered annually at the Free University of Berlin, primarily for future teachers.
