Product details

From the Palace for the Republic to the People's Palace. The public referred to it as "Erich's Lamp Shop" or "Burden of the Republic," named after the then head of state. During its brief period of use starting in 1976 as a government building housing the Chamber of the People and also serving as the central cultural venue of the GDR capital, the "Palace of the Republic" became a well-known term. After the end of the GDR, it was politically condemned to demolition, but was still used for artistic activities for some time, remaining a polarizing topic until the end. The exhibition "Palace of the Republic – Utopia, Inspiration, Political Issue" at the Kunsthalle Rostock showcases furnishings and artworks that engage with the often controversially discussed building. Visitors are invited to remember or rediscover the "Palace" and its many facets. The art and design that once made it shine are expanded through the perspectives of various artists on the "Palace of the Republic," showing it as a source of inspiration even today. Accompanying the exhibition is this richly illustrated catalog, featuring texts by Bazon Brock, Irina Liebmann, Elke Neumann, Olaf Reis, Peter Richter, and Matthias Weghaupt.
