Product details
Package consisting of: Volume 1: Founded in 1841 in Schwyz, the Swiss Student Association (StV) ranks among the oldest associations in Switzerland. During the turbulent founding period of the federal state, it played an important national political unifying role, making it a gathering point for Catholic-conservative students and academics. Most initiatives for the establishment of Catholic newspapers, associations, and political parties originated from it. In the 1930s and 1960s, it was particularly active in public life as part of the youth and student movement. From the very beginning, the association included students from all language groups, giving its central celebrations a diverse character. In 1968, it admitted women as members, which was not yet a given at that time. The first volume on the Swiss Student Association was developed by a team of historians led by Urs Altermatt, a professor of contemporary history at the University of Freiburg i.Ue., and delves into an interesting piece of Swiss history. This reproduction of the original edition from 1993 is supplemented by a second volume that contains a fully updated appendix and sheds light on the development of the association since 1991. Volume 2: The Swiss Student Association (StV), founded in 1841 and with its 6,600 members, takes the 175th anniversary of its existence as an opportunity to comprehensively present the association's history of the last quarter-century and place it in a broader historical context. More than the public is aware, the cultural revolutions of the 1960s and 1970s have changed the StV. The association, which was once clearly associated with the milieu of political Catholicism, has become more diverse in recent years. With the decision in 1968 to grant full membership to female students, the student association took a pioneering role in the history of Swiss and also European student fraternities.
