Product details
The Regensburg monk Otloh of St. Emmeram (circa 1010-1070) described his inner struggles and his development as a writer in a sort of autobiography towards the end of his life. This book presents a critical edition and a German translation of this significant medieval document. Unlike earlier research approaches that focused on the personality of the autobiographer, the author of this study has chosen to examine the text of the 'Liber de temptatione' itself. Following philological and literary questions, she concludes that while the literary techniques and intentions of this medieval autobiographical work are indeed traditional and tailored to the needs of a monastic audience, the work as a whole represents a literary achievement of surprising originality.
