Orientalismus

In his groundbreaking study, Edward Said exposes the Western image of the Orient as profoundly one-sided and as a projection, with the Orient simply understood as different from the Occident. He traces the tradition of this misunderstanding through the centuries in which Europe dominated the Near and Middle East, demonstrating how this image still dominates the West today. Because the Orient is thereby denied the opportunity to represent itself, a true understanding of the cultures is prevented. Even today, thirty years after its initial publication, this classic of cultural historiography has lost none of its relevance - quite the opposite.
