Product details

Seven-year-old Kalle has a great role model: his grandpa. Just like his grandpa, Kalle wants to grow up to be big, strong, and smart. But then grandpa starts to change. He forgets very simple things and becomes stubborn and angry when someone tries to help him. "Grandpa has Alzheimer’s," explains Kalle's mother. But for Kalle, it’s not easy to understand that with Alzheimer’s, forgotten things cannot be learned again. Kalle would have loved to help grandpa with that. When grandpa eventually runs away from home, the family has to make the difficult decision: grandpa can no longer stay at home; he needs to go to a nursing home. From the perspective of seven-year-old Kalle, children witness how life changes with Alzheimer’s, not only for the person affected but also for the entire family. The story revolves around seven-year-old Kalle, whose grandpa is suffering from Alzheimer’s. In various everyday situations, Kalle recognizes the opposing developments between himself and his grandpa – while he himself is learning more and needing less help, the opposite is true for grandpa. In an unvarnished yet loving tone, the story shows that it is perfectly normal for children to not be able to do things as well or at all anymore. Ultimately, what matters most is not what we can do, but what we feel.
