Product details

Online genetic tests or Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) genetic tests are commercially available examinations to determine an individual's genetic traits. Online genetic tests are sold worldwide over the internet without the involvement of a doctor. The development of this market is thriving; however, new testing methods have also introduced risks. Through a market analysis, this paper decodes the DTC industry and demonstrates that the online genetic test offerings are aimed at nearly all areas of human life. The offerings of genetic analyses range from selecting the optimal partner to paternity tests, as well as assessing genetic risk profiles for cancer or predicting life expectancy. Even analyses of the entire human genome can be ordered online and conducted without medical supervision. The trend of online genetic tests impressively illustrates the new challenges of our time. In light of current technological developments in genetic diagnostics, the paper addresses the legal permissibility as well as the opportunities and risks associated with conducting commercial genetic analyses. This opens up both the ethical discussion surrounding online genetic tests and the question of potential solutions. Whether and to what extent there is a need for legislative action will be explored at the conclusion through possible solutions.
