The selected stories in this book show Larissa Reissner's short and exciting life in the shadow of the October Revolution and is divided into three parts: In the first section, "The Front", she reports on the Russian civil war and on embattled places such as Kazan, Svyazhsk and Astrakhan. In the second section, she gives impressions of her travels to Afghanistan, where her husband Raskolnikov was ambassador of the Soviet Union from 1921 to 1923. Finally, she visits the sites of the young Soviet industry and describes mining and metal extraction under adverse conditions in the chapter "Coal, Iron and Living People".
