E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" was published in 1816 as an art fairy tale in Berlin. Marie receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift. What no one believes is that the nutcracker comes to life at night and must engage in fierce battles against the Mouse King, who demands the surrender of the nutcracker from Marie in order to invade the nutcracker's kingdom of sweets with his mice.
