In the second volume, published in November 1918, Döblin's critical gaze is directed at the most important political protagonists of the immediate post-war period: the reactionary Supreme Army Command, the Spartacus League with Karl Liebknecht at its head, but above all the Council of People's Representatives led by Friedrich Ebert. In Döblin's view, the Social Democrat appears to be a great traitor to the revolution. Basically, however, it is the German people themselves who are destroying all hopes of a real new beginning.
