The success story of the human-dog relationship has been ongoing for about 15,000 years, but only recently have dedicated owners sought meaningful activities to keep their four-legged companions physically and mentally engaged. This is usually best achieved through work that requires the dog to use its nose. In his book, Lothar Schilling explains how this works and describes initial introductory exercises. He also discusses the various opportunities available today in sports, search and rescue dog training, or hunting training, as well as the diverse applications of specialized dogs in human medicine or in police and customs work.
