Ethnolinguistik

The book is aimed at those interested in the linguistic representation of conceptual structures. It introduces ethnolinguistics - a field of study where linguistic phenomena are interpreted against a cultural background. It demonstrates how language groups describe their environment differently, taking into account their social and cultural context. Why do the Indigenous people living in West Siberia say that the Old Man of the Forest is heading towards the tundra? What does this have to do with their orientation in their surroundings? Prof. Dr. Beáta Wagner-Nagy is a professor of Finno-Ugric Studies/Uralic Studies at the University of Hamburg. She focuses on the study of Uralic and Siberian languages from a typological and ethnolinguistic perspective. Dr. Ulrike Kahrs is a research associate at the Institute of Finno-Ugric Studies/Uralic Studies at the University of Hamburg. Her research interests lie in the areas of language, culture, and identity.
