Product details
In the footsteps of the world collector. Richard Francis Burton, one of the most colorful figures of the 19th century, became known to the German public through a novel - The World Collector by Ilija Trojanow. For his research, Trojanow traveled for seven years in the footsteps of Burton through India, Arabia, Africa, and North America, sometimes disguised as an Arab during the Hajj or traveling by ship and on foot up the Nile. Some of these research adventures were as thrilling as Burton's own life. In Nomad on Four Continents, Ilija Trojanow presents Burton's unconventional life through excerpts from his work and connects them with his own travel experiences. This creates not only a vivid picture of the eccentric bon vivant from the 19th century but also a historical bridge between then and now, telling of the changes that have occurred over the last one hundred and fifty years.
